The BUCK Cemetery is a family cemetery. It is fenced and the gate is padlocked.
Entry may be obtained with permission of the landowner. The location is 8 miles
north of Artesia on U.S. Highway 285, and east 1/4 mile on a locked dirt drive.

The information on the history of this cemetery was obtained from an interview,
May 10, 2001 with Mrs. James Melton "Mae" BUCK of Artesia, New Mexico. James
Melton BUCK was the son of C.J. BUCK. James Melton and his wife, Mae lived for
many years on the old home place of Mr. & Mrs. Charles James BUCK.

Charles James BUCK, sometimes known as "C.J." was the son of James Madison and
Martha Ann Rowland BUCK. He was born 13 March 1861 in Texas. The BUCK family
came to what was then Lincoln County, NM in 1887 and lived at the head of Cox
Canyon in the Sacramento Mountains. In the winter of 1888 it snowed seven feet on
the level. That winter was referred to and is still remembered as "the Buck's
Snow".

In 1897 C.J. and his wife, Edna Simons "Bamma" BUCK , moved to the Pecos Valley
where he was the first to settle and homestead on Cottonwood Creek, near
Cottonwood Springs. He and his family ran sheep. Later he settled on the
property where the cemetery is located. He drilled his first artesian well in
1905 and planted cottonwood trees, willow trees, orchards and raised alfalfa.

Following is the listing of those buried in the BUCK Cemetery:
